ABSTRACT Phureja Group potato is endemic and important for northern Andean countries such as Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela, where it is grown over a wide range of elevation. The objective of the study was to compare the biomass accumulation of five potato cultivars in three contrasting environments in elevation from a latent response variable of vector nature, analogous to “heat efficiency index”. Destructive samplings were carried to obtain biomass. A biomass accumulation model was proposed using a latent response variable that integrates total biomass per plant with thermal time, analogous to the “heat use efficiency index”. The proposed latent response variable allowed measuring the efficiency in biomass accumulation and making comparisons between elevations and cultivars, with a nonparametric longitudinal variance analysis. The middle location was where the highest efficiency in accumulation of total biomass was observed. The accumulation of total biomass was slow at the higher elevation location during the vegetative stage, but it increased considerably after the initiation of the growth of tubers. The study showed a clear genotype-environment interaction, suggesting that biomass accumulation changes with elevation according to the cultivar. The methodology used in this study has the potential to be used in the longitudinal comparison of cultivars and environments, even when variations in elevation or temperature alter the length of growing cycles.

Resumen Colombia presenta alta diversidad de genotipos de papa diploide (Solanum tuberosum, grupo Phureja), cultivados en un amplio rango altitudinal. El objetivo de esta investigación fue evaluar el efecto de la altitud en el rendimiento y la calidad poscosecha de cultivares mejorados de papa del grupo Phureja. Para ello, se empleó un arreglo factorial completo en bloques generalizados, cuyo primer factor fue el cultivar (Criolla Colombia, Criolla Dorada, Criolla Ocarina, Paola y Violeta) y el segundo, la localidad con altitudes contrastantes (3.200, 2.700 y 2.300 m s.n.m.). Las variables de productividad evaluadas fueron rendimiento, porcentaje por categoría comercial y número de tubérculos, mientras que las de calidad fueron gravedad específica, respuesta a fritura y, para el cultivar violeta, pigmentación en tubérculo. Se presentaron diferencias significativas en todas las variables evaluadas, por la interacción de la localidad por cultivar. Criolla Dorada fue el cultivar más estable en rendimiento entre localidades. En la localidad baja, se afectó la productividad de los cultivares Criolla Ocarina, Paola y Violeta, a diferencia de localidades con mayor altitud, donde se favoreció el rendimiento y porcentaje de papa “categoría primera” en todos los cultivares. Una mayor altitud de la localidad favoreció el número de tubérculos por sitio en Criolla Ocarina, la gravedad específica en Criolla Dorada y la pigmentación en tubérculo de Violeta, pero afectó negativamente la fritura en todos los cultivares. Teniendo en cuenta que la altitud de siembra afectó todas las variables evaluadas con diferencias por cultivar, se debe considerar esta interacción al momento de establecer cultivos de papa del grupo Phureja.

Abstract Colombia has an important diversity of diploid potatoes genotypes (Solanum tuberosum, Phureja Group) cultivated in a wide altitudinal range. The goal of this research was to evaluate the effect of planting altitude in terms of yield and postharvest quality on improved potato cultivars of the Phureja Group. A complete factorial arrangement on generalized blocks was used. The first factor was the cultivar (Criolla Colombia, Criolla Dorada, Criolla Ocarina, Paola y Violeta), and the second one the locality with contrasting altitudes (3200, 2700 y 2300 m a.s.l.). Examined productivity variables were yield, percentage by commercial category and number of tubers, while the quality variables were specific gravity, response to frying and, for the violet cultivar, tuber pigmentation. Significant differences were found in all the variables evaluated, due to the interaction between locality and cultivar. Criolla Dorada was the most stable cultivar in yield between locations. In the lower locality, the productivity of the cultivars Criolla Ocarina, Paola and Violeta was affected, in contrast to localities with higher altitude, where the yield and percentage of "first category" potato was enhanced in all cultivars. Altitude enhanced the number of tubers per site in Criolla Ocarina, specific gravity in Criolla Dorada and pigmentation in Violeta tubers, but negatively affected frying in all cultivars. Considering that planting altitude affected all the variables evaluated with differences by cultivar, this interaction should be considered when establishing potato cultivars of the Phureja group.

Resumen La duración del periodo de reposo en tubérculos es un factor determinante en la planeación de las siembras y la producción de papa. En este estudio se evaluó el efecto de dos reguladores de crecimiento sobre el periodo de reposo y la brotación de tubérculos de papa cultivar Diacol Capíro. El experimento se realizó en condiciones de almacenamiento (15°C y 75% HR) con un diseño de bloques completamente al azar en arreglo factorial 3x3x3. Los factores fueron: ácido giberélico-3 (AG3) y 6-bencilaminopurina (6BAP) (0, 25 y 50 mg L-1) y el tiempo de inmersión (Ti) (10, 60 y 120 min). La aplicación de AG3 y Ti tuvo efecto en interrumpir el periodo de reposo y tratamientos con 25 mg L-1 de AG3 y 60 min de inmersión fueron suficientes para disminuir el reposo en 18 días (35%) con respecto a los tubérculos no tratados. El factor AG3 aumentó la pérdida de peso de los tubérculos (10.2%), generó brotes de mayor peso (25.628.4%), con mayor tasa de crecimiento en longitud (42.3%), con menor contenido de masa seca (21.8-28.4%) y aumentó la brotación secundaria (36.2-57.9%) con respecto a tubérculos no tratados. De esta forma, a pesar de que los tratamientos con 25 mg L-1de AG3 redujeron el periodo de reposo, esta dosis generó brotes más susceptibles al daño mecánico. Los tratamientos con 6BAP no afectaron significativamente las variables evaluadas.

Abstract The duration of the dormancy period in tubers is a determining factor in the planning of potato planting and production. The effect of two plant growth regulators on the dormancy period and sprouting of cv. Diacol Capiro tubers was evaluated in this study. The experiment was carried out under storage conditions (15°C and 75% RH) using a completely randomized block design with 3x3x3 factorial arrangement. The factors were: gibberellic acid-3 (GA3) and 6-benzylaminopurine (6BAP) (0, 25, and 50 mg L-1) and the immersion time (iT) (10, 60, and 120 min). The application of GA3 and iT had an effect on dormancy breakage; the treatments with 25 mg L-1 GA3 and 60 min of immersion were enough to reduce dormancy by 18 d (35%) compared to untreated tubers. The factor GA3 increased tuber weight loss (10.2%), generated sprouts with higher weight (25.6-28.4%), higher length growth rate (42.3%), and lower dry matter content (21.8-28.4%), and it increased secondary sprouting (36.2-57.9%) in comparison with untreated tubers. This way, despite the treatments with 25 mg L-1 GA3 reduced the dormancy period, this dose generated sprouts more susceptible to mechanical damage. The treatments with 6BAP did not significantly affect the evaluated variables.
